Â
The video above was produced by Director William Hoffman and DP Julius Metoyer III in response to an NPR series on Radiolab.
Â
I came across this on a very good website called b-roll.net.
Â
It's for professional cameramen, and while they don't always agree with what we do, they know a lot and take a lot of pride in their work.
Â
Working cameraman Kevin Johnson started the site and runs it all on his own.
Â
Take a look at the Moments video. It's a real testament to the visual power of the medium
Â
Also notice that Hoffman and Metoyer never move the camera.
Â
The sense of motion in the film is entirely carried by the editing and by the sound. Powerful stuff.
Â
If only conventional TV could harness this kind of visual power and marry it to the content of news and journalism on a regular basis.
Â
It would make video a very powerful tool, and it is not so different from what HR Luce did with LIFE Magazine and storytelling with stills - he hired the best photojournalsits in the world to tell stories in powerful pictures and text. All too often today television and online video don't pay enough attention to the pictures.
Â
Which is strange, as its a visual medium first.
