Poor Pathetic Sad Little Fox News

Posted on February 25th, 2011 Written on michael's blog

Do you like this?

laughable and lamentable.

Poor, pathetic, sad little Fox News.

They clearly don't get it at all.

Fox recently annouced a new category of reporters:

Junior Reporters

Says Fox"The idea behind the program is to give the reporter enough cutting-edge gear that is portable enough and easy enough for them to be a one-person band," says Sharri Berg, senior vice president of news operations and services at Fox.

Yes - Junior Reporters

These reporters will carry their own cameras, shoot their own stories, edit them and produce them.

You know... JUNIOR REPORTERS.

Real reporters, as we all know, have make up people, hair people, people who shoot their stories for them, who write their copy for them and an assignment desk that finds their stories for them.

We call these people - at least around here - actors.

In the meantime, we like a few JUNIOR REPORTERS.

Junior reporters like Michelle Michael who just won the NPPA VJ or the Year Award.

We also like JUNIOR REPORTERS like Raul Gallego Abellan who stopped by here to pick up his Royal Television Society Award.

He stopped off between reporting from Cairo. He was on his way to Tripoli.

Oh yeah....

JUNIOR REPORTERS.

Says Fox of the JUNIOR REPORTERS:

All five of the reporters were put through an extensive training program in New York to learn everything from camera operation to editing. They not only come up with the stories but will produce, write, film and edit each report.

WOW!

Mayby, just maybe, FOX NEWS should put some of their SENIOR REPOTERS through such training so they have some basic working knowledge of the medium in which they are supposed to be working.

Of course, if Fox New doesn't have that kind of training, I know where they can get it.

It does suggest a Kelloggs box-top offer for kids to write in for. Get your Junior-G-Man kit, Space Ranger kit, Oceanographer kit, ...Reporter kit. Suggesting in turn that it's something to play at while the ActualFactualReporterWithRequiredRetinue does the actual news. That's how it appears, all right. Of the derisive epithets I read in the blog entry, though, the one that applies most here is "lamentable." Lamentable because the training and commissioning and sending of these Junior (?) types to find/capture/edit news articles began as a good thing, methinks, in some idealist's mind. Got forwarded and processed through a mindless profit machine into the marketeer echelons, where an unimaginative dim-bulb pulled out his thumb (ewww) with a tricky label to maximize corporate visibility. Looking at the present situation from the half-filled viewpoint, it may be that the established crop of journalists may someday aspire to Junior status, hmmm?
