United Nations Video Bootcamp in Nairobi - Day 4

Posted on June 29th, 2012 Written on michael's blog

Do you like this?

Yesterday, CNN suffered a journalistic disaster

It reported that the Supreme Court had thrown out ObamaCare.

Wrong!

The 'reporter' who did this was Kate Bolduan

The 2005 graduate of George Washington University who previously worked for a local TV station in North Carolina was named one of "Washington's Most Beautiful People'.  Mazel Tov.

Good for Kate. Bad for Journalism.

We're here in Nairobi training a new kind of journalist.

These are the folks who do the ground work for the United Nations

They spend years working and living in places like South Sudan, Chad, Mali, Somalia.

The kinds of places Kate Bolduan probably will never see, unless she flies and and flies out with a big support crew.

These people speak the local languages, they know the local people and politics, they live the story every day.

Now, we're equipping them with state of the art digital cameras and laptops and teaching them to shoot, edit, report, upload the stories that they know so well.

Who needs Kate Bolduan in Sudan?  Or Washington DC for that matter?

The whole point of the 'digital revolution' is that qualified, intelligent people can now be empowered to get their stories to the world in video.
