World's First Flipcam Feature Film Gets Distribution

Posted on January 12th, 2011 Written on michael's blog

Do you like this?

David Guy Levy

Yesterday we told you about a Korean director who had shot the world's first feature film on an iPhone.
Today, David Guy Levy not only shot an entire feature, A Love Affair of Sorts, on a flipcam, but has gotten distribution for it.

Shooting a picture is one thing.

Getting distribution is another.

As of this week, Paranormal Activity 2 had raked in more than $85 million, it seems clear that very low budget indys are rapidly gaining traction.

Paranormal's worldwide gross to date:  $165 million.

Distributors are now looking for more low cost/high risk film ventures that can grab an audience.

This is clearly more about writing and storytelling than about expensive special effects or movie star names.

The film follows a guy & girl who meet in a bookstore when he catches her shoplifting with his ever-present Flip cam. As they start up a tentative relationship, he captures it all on the camera, though nothing about the situation is as straightforward as it seems.

Flipcams, as we all know, are the simplest point and shoot cameras around, and are made and distributed by Cisco, of all people.

There's clearly something here.

And it's something we like.

We can't show you a clip from the movie... yet... but we will as soon as it becomes available.

Meanwhile here's a quote from the Very Industry Hollywood Reporter:

"The film follows a guy & girl who meet in a bookstore when he catches her shoplifting with his ever-present Flip cam. As they start up a tentative relationship, he captures it all on the camera, though nothing about the situation is as straightforward as it seems."

We're going to be focusing a lot on indy features in the future.

And we've got our eyes on this one as well.

I think there's a great deal that can be said for being "1st" at anything. I don't think the story and quality have to be as good as normally thought if the video is based on a good gimmick. Paranormal, Open Water, Blair Witch, all gimmick driven. I'm working on a video project that will be a 1st, I'll let you know how that works out. Summer time frame.

The implications of this are enormous. This means that Joe "Layman" can compete with large studios and large budgets with nothing except an inexpensive HD Flip (or its equivalent), an understanding of how to shoot video, and a good story. Thank you, NYVS!
