I think you should go into the location and pay attention to whatever it is they do there as if you had to learn it in order to teach someone. I don't think you necessarily need to know about the topic. In fact, if you don't know about it you should be able to come up with the story much faster because you would just tell what you've just learned. It's like composing an essay for school. I think you have to open your mind and then follow your instincts. Walk around for a while, then sit down and think about the story you would tell your wife or husband or whomever if you just came home. "I went to the store today and the most amazing thing happened".... Like that. If nothing amazing comes to mind, you don't have a story, or a film, for that matter. 7 : Helpful Not Helpful

I believe you said that we are to make a list of seven events need to tell "the story"...I wonder if you have an equally good formula or method of how I might decide on a choice of story while observing the place? It seems good to have at least a strong notion about an idea or plot of a story prior to listing seven events that are to tell 'the story'. Or is it that you know from experience that 'the story' becomes apparent once seven or so events are listed? Or is it that I don’t understand? Helpful Not Helpful

So are we supposed to shoot in this exercises or just write 7 events down? Also, if we are to shoot, are we to edit the seven shots or send you seven files. No editing of any sort were mentioned in any of these exercises... Helpful Not Helpful

I don't think you need a tripod. I only use one for shooting artwork or very long interviews. Go handheld but cradle the camera and hold rock solid when recording. 1 : Helpful Not Helpful

I've uploaded my 5 shot exercise and I didn't even have to edit it, woooo! It cut together perfectly! Cool! I used a tripod which was really fiddly and time consuming and was wondering if i should keep it hand held from now on?? I can't mark the lesson as complete though as it keeps saying I need to view this video first?? I want to do my 7 events at an Acoustic Open Mic in London but I can only think of 5 which is, the host, a performer, the crowd, one person in the crowd and the bar, would that be enough? If i use a tripod there that could be fiddly as well, what do you think...but tripod equals a very still shot. I loved the fact this cut together perfectly!! Nicey! Helpful Not Helpful

@Samzter - Sorry to hear you are running into problems. We found the same problem and will work to quickly fix this. To get around this you can mark the exercise complete on the main overview page: http://www.nyvs.com/courses/Video-Storytelling-Basics. That should allow you you to mark it completed. Email us if you run into more issues: info@nyvs.com. Thanks! Helpful Not Helpful

To get around the glitch, please upload your video on this page: http://www.nyvs.com/upload/ then come back to this page and click on the 'upload courses exercise' on the right side of this page. I know that this question was asked below, and I'm sorry for asking again, but I'm still confused....when I go to the 'Course Exercises' section above, it shows three exercise sections. Each which I can check as 'Viewed/Completed'. This first exercise, called, 'Shooting Exercises' says to go to a place and select 7 events. It never says to film anything, so how do I upload anything that I haven't filmed? P.S. When I go to the 'Course Exercises' section above, and try to check the box 'Viewed/Completed' I can't click it because it tells me I have to view the video before marking it as completed, even though I've already watched it, as well as the whole series? tholmes, You don't have to shoot in a business, but your shoot should be in one location with one story. For instance, you could shoot a chess tournament in the park, but the same rules apply. Seven events, and five shots of each event. If "setting out the chess pieces" is one event, then you'd shoot Close up of Hands, Close Up of Face, Wide shot, Over-the-shoulder shot, and Side shot of that one event. Don't forget to post your exercise when you're done! 3 : Helpful Not Helpful

Hi Kiviovski, The exercise includes writing down the 7 events and then shooting them. You can either post a cut piece from this exercise or the raw material for critique. Hope this answers your question! 2 : Helpful Not Helpful : 1

Sorry I am a little confused, I was wondering if things could be cleared up for me. Is this exersize just writing down a list of the seven shots that I would take in my location, or am I supposed to also take those shots and edit them into a finished piece? 5 : Helpful Not Helpful

Great At the end of the day the only thing the viewer sees is what is on screen. So long as that is perfect and works you have done a great job. 1 : Helpful Not Helpful

I learned so much in this exercise. Even after I had the 7 events written out, shooting them resulted in all sorts of surprises: people walking in front of the shot thus blocking my shot, the train stopped short of frame, I once forgot to hit the record button at a crucial moment, etc...It took four trips to three train stations to finally get the shots I wanted. Great exercise! Helpful Not Helpful

This is what I do before any film shoot. Yes I think is very important, because it is important to have all the key environmental elements of the atmosphere. All have to be shot in the shoot because they are the natural sounds, event, actions, and so on that go on at that particular place. To shoot without these would be like telling a lie. 1 : Helpful Not Helpful : 1
