This lesson was very helpful for me because I'm writing my first script, and now I'm starting to understand how to get the viewer's attention. Thanks a lot

Hi Michael, I appreciated your last comment but I screwed up. I meant to post my previous comment on: http://www.nyvs.com/user/kolbe1019/watch/video/the-urban-foresters-tuf-trees-program-2. I was referring to this student's video that was showcased on the nyvs facebook page. I wasn't making a comment about your lecture video. This comment was regarding your student's video. What you just posted made sense but how would it relate to your showcased video that your student made? He seems to have broken all of your rules and I don't see how it is an example of what you teach. It confuses me. Thanks. PS: I love how you teach and what I'm learning.

Hi Sam You raise an interesting point, so let me explain this as best I can. The very best video is one that reflects the way that you would naturally see the world. So, I discourage people from shooting piles of cupcakes at a bakery, for example - because most people don't spent their time staring at piles of cupcakes. I also discourage formal interview, because in day to day life, most people don't interview. What I am doing here is lecturing - trying to explain something to you (figuratively). If you were sitting in one of my classes, this is exactly what it would look like (trust me). As such, I have tried, as best I can, to reproduce the experience you would have if we were together in person. As we are not, I have to try and do this in video. This is not so much a piece, as it is a lesson. Does that make sense? And more importantly, did I get my point across in the lesson?

I don't want this to sound negative about this video. It is very well done...in the traditional sense. But aren't we supposed to keep from shooting inanimate objects and get our sound-bites embedded with the 5 shoot system and not doing a "sit-down" interview? Like I said, I'm a new student and I do take Michael's advice literally. After all, this is being showcased as an example of what Michael teaches. It doesn't seem so.
