I'm having trouble incorporating narration into my videos yet when I see other videos that have narration they flow and it seems so obvious! I need suggestions from the NYVS community to help me...
I just uploaded to the NYVS site a video incorporating my first narration, 2010 Fall Chinook Fishing. Michael suggested that I use the "Charles Kuralt" mindset, which is to narrate as I am watching the video...that's a pretty good trick to use when the Fear of Narration strikes fear in my body.. I must say by using that mentality it worked, albeit not Charles Kuralt (RIP) but at least I've overcome my phobia..
Yeah
I am definitely going to address this in a video. But in the meantime, you can practice at home by simply recording narration while watching the images on FCP in a rough cut. If you're married or have kids or something you can plop one of them in front of you and just talk to them. It's pretty easy. Also, if you have not seen The King's Speech yet, check it out.
When you describe narration like this it's easier to visualize it and not get uptight, Michael. Since FON is such an integral part of successful videography, it would be helpful to demonstrate, using before and after videos, the impact that narration has on a video.....

Years ago, I produced Charlie Kuralt at CBS and he was one of the world's best narrators. He used to do it by watching the video go by and just talking to the audience as though he was talking to a friend. He didn't really 'read' a script. Just talked it. you can do this with FCP. Simple. Relaxed and natural are the best rules of thumb...
