One word of caution Most of these soft boxes are designed for flash.
You will be putting a constant light source in side of it. This can be a real fire hazard. (they are called hot lights for a reason.) be sure you have plenty of ventilation so that heat can escape. and don't allow the bulb to touch the fabric. You might try it with a compact fluorescent bulb they are much cooler.
simpleman I have been a location photographer for over 20 years and when I needed soft diffuse light I would shoot my light though a hanging piece of white ripstop nylon (This is called a scrim) on a big set I have even used a white parachute. The softness of the light is caused by the size of the source. big scrim = big light. After the shoot you can just fold it up and stick it in a bag.
I just got my hands on this book "A Shot in the Dark" by Jay Holben. The first half of the book covers lighting principles and the second half shows you how to make your own lights and gear. I haven't read it yet but it looks pretty good and has detailed instructions/photos on how to make the lights.
Also you could use a "China Ball". They are round paper lanterns that you can find in any Home store [Home Depot, Lowes, World Market]. You just need to find ways to block off the light to prevent spill. But it is a cheap solution.
Hi Simpleman, Here's a great link from DIY Photography.net on how to make an inexpensive softbox.
