Thread : Starter Handycam Recommendation??

Posted on Sep 29, 2010 at 11:18 pm
There seems to be too much to choose our there and being that I am all too new into this world, I need advice...What is a good starter handycam to practice with and inevitably shoot 'How to' or 'My name is' up to 2-3 min spot intros or 5-10 min prep with editing? Thanks for the help!

OK.
In the 'can't go wrong, around $500, I'm just getting started' area you should look at the
Sony HDR-XR150 120GB HD Handycam Camcorder and the
Canon VIXIA HF M30 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder
I am not recommending these per se, and there are certainly others you can consider, but many people who have taken the bootcamp have used these and they seem very happy with them. If you are in NY, I would strongly suggest you go over the B&H Photo on 9th Avenue. They have a pretty limitless selection, they'll let you play with the cameras and their sales people are very well informed.

You SHOULD however, take a look at www.bhphoto.com. That is the best place to buy a camera and also peruse the options. The only thing you want to be sure of is that you have a firewire connection that is compatible with your laptop or computer. Take a look, and if you come down to a few choices, lemme know and I will be happy to help.

Hello Michael
I went to B&H and they seem to have everything and anything under the sun. I narrowed down 2 cameras: Canon Vixia HF R10 and Canon Vixia HF M300 Flash Memory Camcorder. If you have any suggestions I am open...Thanks!

Thank You TopAbbott. I already have both of them and needed a cam to use to go through the lessons.

I LOVE B&H Photo, especially going in the place, looking up and seeing everything moving around on the conveyors, soooo cool!

I recommend starting a Flip HD or Sony Webbie HD. They're great for cost + quality. Extremely easy to use, in decent lighting they give you a great picture. There are some videos here at NYVS, with the wonderful Tiffany Burnett on the Flip,
