30p is great to use for documentary/non-fiction. It gives a sense of immediacy. 24p is a film look and is great to use for narrative-fiction pieces. Ultimately it is up to you as the shooter to decide what works best for you. The best advice I got was to play around with each frame-rate and see how it looks. Good luck and have fun!
You are right that 60i would be the best for filming sports. The higher the frame rate, the crisper the detail in motion. 60p would be even better, if your camera has it. 60i is 30 frames per second "interlaced", and 60p is 60 full frames per second "progressive" which is excellent for using the kind of slow motion shots often used when shooting sports.
