Thread : Critiques - Again

Posted on Nov 23, 2011 at 12:59 am
I just wanted to say that I have really enjoyed this site and have learned a lot. One of the reasons I joined was the ability to get feedback on my work. It is great because it's like taking a class without having to attend physically and I have learned so much. However, it seems the critques have stopped - or at least, the opportunity for me to receive one has stopped. It doesn't really make sense to me that if you request no more than one or two critiques a month that is too many or that the more active members, those of us who post videos and ask questions more frequently, should be put on the back burner. Being a more active member on the site would seem to warrent more attention, not less. I canceled my membership because this issue really bothers me but just thought before I totally give up, I would ask for clarification on this. I have had trouble getting an answer on this question, despite posting it several times. Again, I have only asked for 1 or 2 critiques per month. No more. Are critiques still an option for paying members, those who have been around a while? Thank you!

Thanks If you ever have a problem, please feel free to get in touch with me directly. No matter how many members, I am going to make every effort to make sure everyone gets individualized attention

Thank you so much for the response, Michael. Sorry for my delayed response. I was out of town for the holidays. I have a much better understanding now. 12,000 members - that great! I understand the dilemma. This site is a great learning tool. I renewed my membership. Thank you so much!!

Dear Moonunit
Yeah, this is a problem I have been grappling with for some time. The critique is probably the best learning experience anyone can have. It's the only way to make progress. When we do the 'bootcamps' we have a public critique of everyone's work we call Public Praise, Public Humiliation every evening when we screen and critiques everyone's work in front of everyone else. Seeing other people's mistakes helps everyone.
When we started NYVS it was my intention to critique everything as well. But success has caused a problem. We now have more than 12,000 members, which is great, but makes critiquing everyone's work impossible.
One solution was to hire a bunch of NYU students as 'critiquers', but frankly that is worse than not doing it. They don't know anything and what they do offer tended to be mere platitudes: "really good job"
A total waste of time.
I feel like I have to do this myself or it degrades the quality of all critiques.
Reading your post last night I started to think about a different way of doing this.
I am thinking that maybe twice a week I will do a public critique of someone's work, but in the blog.
This way the critique is a shared experience.
I am, of course, sorry you are leaving.
However, if you feel like sticking around, I am more than happy to make your work the guinea pig for the first blog critique.
Lemme know
And thanks for the honest feedback. It helps.
