Thread : NYVS Needs Your Help to Shape NYVS!

NYVS wants its members to shape the direction of where we take the site.  We want your help to make NYVS the most valuable experience possible and to be the best online community for learning how to make great digital video.  Please give us your ideas on what we should improve and what new features you would like to see added to the site.

Here are a couple of ideas that we are working on:

•  Project / Job Board:  A place where you will be able to find work and look for people to collaborate with on projects.
•  Contest Board:  Listing of contests and other opportunity to use your video, either to make money or just for fun.
•  User Badging:  Earn points or awards to become a higher level member of NYVS for completing courses and being active on the site.  The status you earned can help you promote your work and build your resume.  Earning more points will also open you up to additional benefits.
•  Facebook Connect:  Connect your NYVS account with Facebook so you can share your work and accomplishments
•  Live Lecture:  Frequent online lectures on topics of your choice.  You will be able to ask questions to and interact with the NYVS instructors.
•  Online Video Editing Tool
•  iPhone and iPad App
•  Certification Process:  Earn a NYVS certificate for complete a set number of courses.  Certificates could require you to pass exercises or tests to show you have mastered the skills.
•  Request a Critique:  Request feedback on your video creations by a NYVS instructor or other NYVS Members.

Let us know what you think of these ideas and which ones we should do first.  Don’t limit your ideas to this list and let us know of other great ideas that you might have.

If you want to contact me directly to provide feedback, I would love to speak with you.  You can email me at dave@nyvs.com

Thanks in advance for all of the feedback that you can provide!

I was thinking about the newsletter you sent today, there was a story about Telling stories with photos, it lead to a photography site and I saw that the site provides daily assignments for photographers. I thought it would be a great idea to make a monthly or weekly assignment. A lot of people work well under pressure and there's value in feeling that our instructors at NYVS are expecting work back from us. Just a thought cuz I think that the improvements on the site are great.

I love the idea about requesting feedback. I believe that is the most valuable thing because it's the only way we can really learn from our mistakes. All of the ideas sound great and I look forward to what's coming. It would be really helpful if we could ask questions and receive answers about all sorts of situations that come up while filming.

Thank you for wanting to improve the site and keep up the good work!

All fantastic ideas!

My preference would be FaceBook connect first. As a student I'm hoping to build a brand for myself, offer my skills to potential clients. Having my NYVS profile connected to the most connected site in the world would be of great value.
User Badging would be next on my list. You get out what you put in. Recognition is a great way to keep people interested and motivated.
Certification would be my number 3. The will gain power as people start getting certified and getting jobs because of that certification.
Live lectures and Request a Critique I would love.
Project boards, then contest boards.
I personally would skip an online editing tool. There's beena few with only marginal success and to me the value of this site is in teaching me how to use the great, powerful tools that are already available. Stick to the top non-linear programs.
I'm not sure what the iPhone/iPad app would be. I have a Droid, but hope to get an iPad around Christmas. It might be nice for simple projects but don't stray too far from your core competencies.
An NYVS online festival OR a NYVS inclusion into one of the great NYFestivals. It would be great to compete for a spot at Tribeca under the NYVS banner.
