How do you make your sound extreme?

My first project 'The Making of an Artist' I used the built-in mic on my camera & laptop. As a result the sound quality was poor. On the 'Heritage film I went online to Amazon.com & ordered the Zoom H1 digital recorder w/ accessories pack. The recorder is small & light weight & has a tripod thread. I attached it to the end of a mono pod & used it as a boom mic. I was shooting outdoors so I used the low cut setting & windscreen. That cut out the wind & distant noises. Using this setup, I could capture individual sounds to mix later. With the monopod I could get the recorder right over a hold in the ice above a stream in the canyon. I also captured the wind, which I used in my second shot. Just an attempt to make it sound cold. My favorite sound was a flock of Chuckers cooing & flying off nearby. To sync audio, use a clapper or have your actor clap in front of their face after both record buttons are on then use the audio waveform to match spike with the film. Keep it EXTREME!!! Peace...
