NYVS Critique

You have a nice story here MHart and for your first exercise in video storytelling it's pretty good. You should always start with your best shot, whatever it is, even if it's not the first thing you filmed because the story doesn't have to be edited in the order you shot it. I think your best shot comes 24" into the story with the close up of the paints being mixed, this should then lead to a shot of your character's face and your chance to set up the story "Jean Hart is an artist but she only discovered this talent after a devastating injury forced her to give up her career as a baker". As the viewer I immediately understand the story whereas looking at your opening shot I'm wondering why I'm looking at Jean in the chair with headphones and her rollers in. Michael mentioned the audio issues which I think are in the recording rather than the mix.

Thank you Lisa for the great critique! Audio seems to be one of my biggest issues right now. In my quest to solve this problem, I found a great solustion in the February 2012 no.61 issue of Mac Life on pg 40. The article recomends using an external digital sound recording device. They featured the Zoom H1. I immediatly ordered the Zoom H1 from Amazon.com with the accessories package and lapel mic. The cost was around $130. I had a chance to use it while I shot my next project yesterday. It has a tripod mount which I was able to screw onto a mono pod and used it as a boom mic. It's a very light weight set up and easy to pack around. You can judge the quality of the recording for yourself when I post my next project, 'An American Heritage'. Thank you all for your feedback. Thank you for the feedback Michael. I will run through the audio tutorials and try not to make that mistake again. If anyone has any tips for better audio, I'm shooting on a handycam and editing with iMovie.... Helpful Not Helpful

Nice job. Watch the audio mix. there's a bit of a contrast between your narration and Jean's soundbite. But for a first time out, quite good; 1 : Helpful Not Helpful
