First, I'm a former (southern-) Californian, so your scenes evoke many mellow thoughts. Things I particularly like: treatment of the postcards/archival type photos; vocal quality of interviewer and John Daley; cleanness of sound; excellent use of J-cuts/L-cuts to link scenes; general focus and progression throughout. Lots of quality overall, but some things I'm iffy about: back and forth nature of the interview itself (not to exclude this "I-say-then-you-say-then-I say" seesaw entirely, but its format risks distracting from what's being said, after awhile); the use of contemporary stills where videos of the same subject could have been harvested with more time investment--visuals of Oceanside's early days depend on stills, while insertion of modern photos may distract the viewer from the visual flow of things; some loose ("he's talking so the video is rolling but I'd like to get closer, so I'll press the little treadle...") zooms to hide w B-roll stuff.
Have a look at one of my films leave a comment and a rating thanks This is the link: http://www.nyvs.com/user/Martell/watch/video/scarlet-violet-flower-shop
Great job! One of the best I have seen on NYVS, had me really getting into it, I like the photo effects with the narration and transitions. But I would loss the zoom in and out on you and in the interview (not the photos tho) , also in the interview I would just have 10sec - 15sec with each shot in different angles. Its crazy because I the did same kind of thing in my video, Watching your's I know, It's not a good look now, I'll never do that again.
Great work! Thank you for sharing. I like the composition of the scenes. I like the ending surfing scene with the framing.
May I ask what microphone is the reporter using? Is it a wireless microphone? Looking forward to your answer. Thanks in advance.
Man... most people here ad NYVS would envy you for having a EX-1. I would love to have one I only own a HF s200.
On the other hand what I begin to understand that the craft of a good video peice primarely lies in the story and the creativity of the maker.
A well directed piece on a merely handycam from a good filmaker wil probably be 100 times more interesting than a poorly directed piece from an amature shot on a RED EPIC.
anyways.. I agree with the previous commenters that angle switching would make it more lively but it is a good solid piece that looks professional and is nicely eddited. Well done!
